Vitry
The Legras-Haas family cultivates 12 hectares of vines near Vitry, one of the finest terroirs for chardonnay in Champagne. These mature vines wind their way down the hillsides of Perthois, near to Vitry-le-François, reputed for its chalk and clay soils with excellent water regulation properties.
Overlooking the open and airy lowlands, the rainfall levels are higher here than in the “Côte des Blancs”. This is a terroir that truly holds its own, as can be seen in certain vines that adapt very well to green cover despite the frequent dry weather conditions in summer. However the ripening kinetics differ from one terroir to the next are here very brisk which calls for caution, the Vitry vines needing to be harvested much more quickly than those on Chouilly, for example.
These wines offer incredible finesse, structure and persistency combined with a rich array of ripe fruits and yellow fruits that linger on the everlasting finish. There is a certain subtlety and ethereality within Vitry wines they grant blends a remarkable elegance.
The vines flourish in this parcel’s south-east exposure, gently sloping hillsides and warm climate.
